Uninstalling Karma: What Happens to Your Pages?
Summary
Uninstalling Karma won’t delete your content, but it will prevent Confluence from displaying it properly. That’s because Karma uses advanced macros that Confluence can’t render on its own. Your data remains safely stored and will become visible again if you reinstall Karma. A direct conversion to native Confluence pages isn’t possible, though simplified versions can be recreated manually. Additionally, some Aura features—provided through Karma—will no longer be available after uninstallation.
What happens to my Karma pages when I uninstall the app?
Karma pages rely on Confluence macros to display enhanced content. When the Karma app is uninstalled, Confluence can no longer render these macros and will instead display an error message. This is standard behavior for all third-party apps in Confluence.
Additionally, uninstalling Karma will disable the following Aura features, as they are provided through Karma:
Where is my Karma content stored?
All Karma content is stored directly within your Confluence instance. Uninstalling the app does not delete any data—it simply prevents Confluence from rendering it properly. Once Karma is reinstalled, your content will display correctly again.
Think of it like a Word document on your computer: the file is still there, but if Microsoft Word isn't installed, you can't open or view it.
Why is Karma required to view my content?
Karma introduces layout and design capabilities that go beyond what native Confluence supports. Without Karma, Confluence lacks the functionality needed to render these enhanced elements.
Can I convert Karma pages back to regular Confluence pages?
Not directly. Confluence offers only basic layout options, making a 1:1 conversion impossible. However, you can manually recreate a simplified version of your Karma pages using native Confluence tools. This process requires individual decisions for each page and cannot be automated due to the limitations of Confluence's layout system.
